William T. “Shorty” Bales, Jr. was a veteran P-47 pilot and credited with the 371FG’s firs jet kill.

For some of the fallen members of the 371st Fighter Group, there are memorials of various kinds.  One of the internet memorials one can view is that for Major William T. “Shorty” Bales, Jr., who went MIA April 13, 1945 during an aerial engagement, and did not survive the war.  He was a member of the Group staff at that time, having previously flown with one of the fighter squadrons (406FS), and was credited in the Group’s Warbook (p. 55) with Frisky’s first aerial victory over an enemy jet fighter, an ME-262 on March 31, 1945.  The East Tennessee Veterans Memorial Association has kindly remembered him, with a memorial page at:
